
There we were, four families gathered for one of our nightly dinner parties during our annual stay at a mountain cabin when we heard a THUMP and the tell-tale sound of injury, a child beginning to cry. Until that moment, the children had been running around the big mountain cabin as they played. Then, one of the boys had taken a tumble off of the porch steps. As the adults arrived on scene, a nine-year old was crying and holding his left arm.

Nowadays, it’s all too easy for children to fall into a life of inactivity. TV and video games encourage a sedentary existence, setting up habits that are difficult to break as an adult. That’s why one of the best gifts parents can give their children is a lifestyle that encourages physical activity and healthy nutrition!

Everybody is talking about the pertussis (also known as whooping cough). Whooping cough is back and it’s making news. In fact, my colleague, Dr. Brett Leggett recently wrote a two-part blog series: Whooping Cough: California’s Epidemic where he shares symptoms, diagnosis, vaccinations and treatment.

The fall season is upon us and so is the dreaded FLU Season. As a pediatric nurse, it’s important to me to share some information about avoiding catching the flu because children can be more significantly affected by the flu than adults, as can individuals at any age with existing medical conditions.

Know About the Glow is a campaign to share an educational message with other parents around the world—that a golden glow reflected back from a child’s eye in a flash photograph can spell eye disease or cancer. This campaign is taking the lead in promoting early detection and treatment of preventable blinding diseases like retinoblastoma, Coats’ Disease, Norrie’s Disease, and many other devastating, yet common, eye conditions.
