Woody and Maki Gruninger: Share Your Story

The following letter was recently sent in by Woody and Maki Gruninger, parents of 4-year-old Maksim, thanking staff on 6 East for all of their teamwork, collaboration and compassion while they cared for the couple’s son during his stay at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Shout outs go to the following: Monica Coles, Sherylyn Gaba, Corey Stapleford and Jocelyn Robinson. Way to go!

Dear 6 East Nursing Supervisor,

We are sending this very belated letter of appreciation regarding the nurses in 6 East who cared for our son while he was admitted after double hip surgery on April 17, 2012. Our son, Maksim Gruninger had double hip dysplasia surgery with Dr. Robert Kay and Maksim was admitted into 6 East Room 6113 after his surgery. This is Maksim’s second surgery he’s had at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and he has received nothing less than the best treatment. Maksim is 4 ½ years old with cerebral palsy. We are so grateful for the outstanding care he is consistently given when at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Maksim was admitted from April 17th to the 19th and he had such remarkable nurses. We would especially like to recognize Monica, Sherilyn, Corrie, and Jocelyn. (We don’t recall their last names.) They were truly a godsend, not only for Maksim but for us, too. We stayed with Maksim the entire time he was in the hospital and it was such a great comfort and help when the nurses were kind and patient to show us how to properly care for Maksim while in his Spica cast. He had to be moved and turned every few hours and they made sure he was comfortable as much as he could be. We understand their job is demanding and stressful at times with many responsibilities they have with numerous patients. We observed their diligence and especially cautious practice of administering medications. They would double or even triple check when Maksim’s medications were due and were prompt with his need of pain medication. We were also asked often if we needed anything. We can’t praise them enough of how much we appreciate the personal care and compassion they provided.

These nurses represent the hospital with such high regard and an example of outstanding hospital care. We ask that they get the positive acknowledgement they deserve and we hope that there efforts are frequently appreciated from the view of the patients and families.

Sincerely,

Woody, Maki, and Maksim Gruninger
