On Dec. 1, patients and families gathered in the 4th floor family room for a surprise visit from Bruno Mars as part of the Get Well Soon Tour.

The tour unites musicians to bring happiness and light to sick children through musical performances at hospitals around the world. As part of the effort, Austin Bisnow, a co-founder of the tour came for the visit. A musician himself, Austin welcomed the patients and families to the room, handed out bongos, tambourines and shakers and gave them the tools to jam with him as they waited for the surprise guest to arrive.

Selena Gomez fan and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles patient, Hana Hwang received the surprise of her 13-year-old life when the pop start showed up at the hospital for a surprise visit.

Hana’s tutor, Sara Kim, nominated Hana and her family as recipients for the KISSMAS Giving campaign on the 102.7 radio station in Los Angeles. Sara requested a care package and a Kindle for Hana, an avid reader.

However, when Ryan Seacrest learned that the 13-year-old Children’s Hospital Los Angeles patient is a devoted Selena Gomez fan, he immediately reached out to the young star.

Stars and Lights Twinkle at the 2011 Holiday Lighting Ceremony

Since 2005, Dan and Martha Cuñado have been spreading holiday cheer to patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles during the annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony.

In honor of the care provided by Children’s Hospital Los Angeles during their child’s stay, the Cuñado family have provided all the decorations and lighting for the event for the past six years, held in The Joyce and Stanley Black and Family Healing and Meditation Garden.

First-Ever Time Capsule Placed at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

On Nov. 30, CHLA dedicated the first-ever time capsule at the hospital.

Organized by the Employee Appreciation and Recognition Committee, the time capsule contains 75 items submitted by colleagues from around the hospital. Among other items, a lab coat adorned with many pins from Stuart Siegel, MD, along with scrapbooks, photos and other mementos were included.

Adolescent and Young Adult Transition: A Black Swan Event

Roberta G. Williams, MD, professor of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, was honored at the Saban Symposium, an annual event at The Saban Research Institute of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. In an address to the audience, Williams outlined the challenges facing pediatric patients when they transition into the adult-centered health care model.

A Black Swan Event is an unanticipated event driven by a collective blindness that simply does not foresee the impact of the occurrence.

Lifetime Achievement Award—Bob Miller

Although Bob Miller’s middle initial is T, for Theodore, it might as well stand for Teacher. The staff at the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles hold Bob in high regard for his teaching skills during his tenure as a physician’s assistant there since 1982. In addition, Bob has been assistant professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Family Medicine at USC since 1988.
